What is Hamdard Roghan Zarareeh?

It is a Unani oil, a medicated oil made by steeping natural ingredients in a carrier oil. Some sellers spell it Rogan Zarareeh or Roghan Zarareeh, and all refer to the same oil. Hamdard makes it, and you can see more oils in our hair oil range. The carrier oil is not named in the published list, so check the label.

Roghan Zarareeh uses: what is it traditionally used for?

In Unani practice, medicated oils of this kind are used as scalp and hair tonics, applied from the outside. We do not promise any change in your hair, and results vary from person to person. Read the directions on the bottle, and speak to a qualified Unani practitioner if you have a scalp or hair concern that bothers you. New to Unani medicine? What is in it?

The published formula lists three ingredients.

NakchiniCentipeda minimaWhole herbPlant ingredient
Kharateen MusaffaPheretima speciesPurified earthwormAnimal-derived
Baiza MurghHen’s eggEggAnimal-derived. Allergen: egg

Two of the three are animal-derived, so this oil is not vegetarian or vegan, even though it is applied on the skin. Match the list to your bottle. The label is the final word.

How do you use it?

Use it as the label says. Many practitioners advise a small amount on the scalp, applied with a cotton swab or fingertips.

AdultsA small amount, as the label advisesScalp and hair, never in the eyesAs the label or your practitioner advisesOnly as long as your practitioner advises

Pharmacist tip: do a patch test first. Put a drop behind your ear, wait 24 hours, and use the oil only if the skin stays calm.

Who should not use it?

  • Anyone allergic to eggs or to any listed ingredient.
  • Anyone with broken, sore or infected scalp skin.
  • Children, unless a practitioner advises it.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women, unless their doctor agrees.
  • Anyone who wants a vegetarian or vegan product.

What are the side effects?

Some people may get itching, redness or a rash on the scalp. Wash it off with a mild shampoo and stop using the oil if that happens. See a doctor if the reaction does not settle. Do not swallow the oil, and keep the bottle away from children.

How do you check that a bottle is genuine?

Read the licence number, batch number and seal on your bottle before first use. Our genuine-store guide explains every check, and you are welcome to consult our experts before you order.

Roghan Zarareeh in Hindi:

Frequently asked questions

What is Hamdard Roghan Zarareeh?

Hamdard Roghan Zarareeh is a Unani herbal oil for the scalp and hair, made by Hamdard Laboratories. The published list has three ingredients: Nakchini, Kharateen Musaffa and Baiza Murgh. It is for external use only. We make no claims about hair results, so ask a Unani practitioner if you have a concern.

Roghan Zarareeh oil kaise lagayein?

Is bare mein hum koi vaada nahi karte. Unani mein is tarah ke tel sir aur baalon ke tonic ke roop mein bahar se lagaye jaate hain. Asar har vyakti mein alag hota hai. Pehle kisi qualified Unani tabeeb se baat karein aur bottle ka label padh lein.

Is it safe for sensitive skin, and is it vegetarian?

Do a patch test first, because the oil contains egg and may not suit sensitive skin. It is not vegetarian or vegan, since Kharateen Musaffa is earthworm and Baiza Murgh is egg. Stop using it if you notice itching, redness or a rash, and see a doctor if it persists.

How do I know my Roghan Zarareeh bottle is genuine?

Read the maker name, address, licence number, batch number and expiry date on the label, and confirm the seal is unbroken. Keep the bill, because it should show the batch number. Be careful with any oil that promises quick results. Our genuine-store guide explains each check.
